If you need (or just want) to lose weight, the
mere necessity may not be enough to motivate you. Some people are intrinsically
motivated but some people are extrinsically motivated. If you are extrinsically
motivated, you are the type of person that needs an outside influence
in order to motivate you towards action. When it comes to working out,
extrinsically motivated people may often find it easier to sit down
on the couch than get to the gym. If this describes you, you just need
to find the right exercise program for you.
Finding an Exercise Program near You
Finding an exercise program near you should not be terribly difficult.
A lot of places offer different types of structured classes that will
help you feel like you are a part of something. Start by looking at
places that are community centered, such as the local YMCA, school,
or church. You might even find some organizations that are committed
to health and wellness that you wouldn't have thought of.
Even if you live in the country and there aren't too many organizations
near you, look for the nearest place to ride horses. Horseback riding
can actually be one of the best workouts because it uses almost every
muscle in the body. If you can't find anything else, just look for
two or three other people who are interested in a weight loss exercise
program and get something started amongst yourselves.
What to Look For in an Exercise Program
When you're looking for an exercise program, try to look for something
that seems appealing. Exercise causes negative thoughts for most people.
If you think negative thoughts whenever you think about your exercise
program, chances are you won't be very successful in exercising regularly
and losing weight. Look for something you will enjoy doing.
In order to find an exercise program that is enjoyable, think about
things that you already enjoy doing, and tailor your workout to that.
If you really love swimming and being in water, aquatic aerobics would
be a great choice. If you really love playing racquetball, look to
join a local league where you will ensure that you play two or three
times a week. Everybody should be able to find some form of exercise
that they enjoy being a part of.
If you choose a type of exercise that involves having an instructor
(as aquatic aerobics would), make sure you get along with the instructor.
If you don't get along with the instructor you probably won't enjoy
his or her class, and you already know that enjoying exercise is a
big key to being successful at it. Many places will allow you to "audit"
a class by going to one session for free.
Speaking of the cost, you should also make sure you aren't paying
more than the program is worth. If you have more than one option,
shop around a little. Finally, make sure you don't have to go at it
alone. Having a friend or two to hold you accountable for your workout
can be one of the biggest factors in succeeding. You can encourage
each other and be there for each other in case you get a little embarrassed
in a room full of other fit people.
Finding an enjoyable exercise program and making sure you stick to
it will give you more energy and help you feel better about yourself.
It's never too early to start looking or making a plan and a resolution
to lose weight.
